Creatio Ex Materia

God created the universe out of eternal matter that already existed.

Creation out of matter is “creation by God out of some previously existing, eternal lump of clay.”1 Norm Geisler

In ancient Greek mythology, these disorderly pre-existing materials were called chaos. This solution envisions God as more of a Craftsman than a Creator, simply because He has raw materials with which to work. However, it begs the question, “How did these materials come into existence in the first place?”

Both Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses affirm creatio ex materia. However, no scriptural support exists for the creation of chaos prior to everything else.

All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. John 1:3
